I thought teammate Patrick Flowers laid out a strong case for why Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson should be the Chicago Bears’ No. 1 target in the team’s head coaching search. And with the Lions in town to play the Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field, you can expect to hear more chatter connecting Chicago’s football team and Detroit’s OC. For what it’s worth, it isn’t writers like Patrick or me who think Johnson would make sense as the next Bears head coach. Even Lions players are making a case for him.
Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times captures two quotes from Detroit Lions wide receivers that do a good job explaining why Ben Johnson will get consideration for the head coaching position in Chicago (and likely, elsewhere):
Those two quotes prove to me that you don’t need thousands of words of prose to sum up a situation when only a few will do.

The quotes from Jameson Williams and Tim Patrick stand out to me because they endorse Ben Johnson for different reasons.
For instance, Tim Patrick’s words about Johnson being a coach who listens to players and values their input resonates with me because you don’t have to go too far back in Bears history to find how a disconnect between players and coaches can negatively impact the team.
We can cite how Bears captains initiated a meeting with Shane Waldron to get him to coach them harder. Or we can discuss how the disconnect between the coach and quarterback reared its ugly head when time ran out on the Bears’ comeback opportunity against the Lions on Thanksgiving. Heck, we could even go back to the Luke Getsy era when Justin Fields openly discussed not being on the same page with his play-caller. If the Bears can hire a coach who can be a unifying force in the locker room and as a play caller, it could help this franchise escape its current doldrums.

The Jameson Williams quote made my ears perk up, too. And not just because he calls Ben Johnson a “mastermind.” Williams confidently expressing his belief that Johnson would hire a competent defensive coordinator is the type of thing that eases one of my biggest concerns about bringing in Johnson (or any offensive coordinator) in this hiring cycle.
The Bears’ next head coach needs to put together a strong staff in order to get the most out of this team. Don’t get me wrong. It would be wise to hire an offensive-leaning head coach to help get quarterback Caleb Williams on the right path. But getting it right at QB isn’t the only thing on the next head coach’s to-do list. It is way too early for me to dive into potential defensive coordinator pairings for Ben Johnson. However, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t already on my mind.
