The 5 best FPL tips for Gameweek 17

The busiest period in the Fantasy Premier League calendar is upon us with three gameweeks condensed into an eight-day period either side of Christmas Day.

The festive fun begins this weekend with five games being played on Saturday followed by another five on Sunday.

Sensibly, there are no fixtures on Christmas Eve after last year’s debacle…

There are a few pre-Christmas crackers to look forward to this weekend. Aston Villa will be out to pile more misery on Manchester City, Crystal Palace host Arsenal a few days on from their epic Carabao Cup meeting, and a topsy-turvy Spurs side welcome the league leaders Liverpool to north London.

We will return with a bumper edition of FPL tips on Christmas Eve covering the final two gameweeks of 2024.

The Gameweek 17 deadline is at 11am on Saturday 21 December:

    Saturday 21 December

    *3pm kick-off unless otherwise stated

Aston Villa vs Man City (12.30pm)

    Brentford vs Nottingham Forest

    Ipswich vs Newcastle

    West Ham vs Brighton

    Crystal Palace vs Arsenal (5.30pm)

    Sunday 22 December

    *2pm unless otherwise stated

    Everton vs Chelsea

    Fulham vs Southampton

    Leicester vs Wolves

    Man Utd vs Bournemouth

    Tottenham vs Liverpool (4.30pm)

This week’s most popular transfer appears to be Rayan Ait-Nouri out and Antonee Robinson in.

Ait-Nouri is the most sold asset ahead of Saturday’s deadline after stupidly being sent off after the final whistle as Wolves slumped to defeat against Ipswich.

Robinson, meanwhile, is gaining in popularity and is currently second in the most-bought charts.

The 27-year-old hits the FPL sweet spot of being in supreme form and having promising fixtures coming up.

A pair of assists at Anfield last weekend took the Liverpool-raised United States international to six for the campaign, two more than any other defender.

Fulham won’t be travelling around much during the festive period which should help Robinson and co stay nice and fresh. Their next four fixtures are all in west London: Southampton (h), Chelsea (a), Bournemouth (h) and Ipswich (h).

    Price: £4.8m Points: 55 Gameweek 17 fixture: Southampton (h)

    Amad Diallo (Man Utd)

Step aside Morgan Rogers, there is a new bargain buy in town.

Since Gameweek 1, Rogers has been the standout midfielder priced at £5m at the start of the season, but his status has slipped since the emergence of Enzo Fernandez and Amad Diallo over the past few gameweeks.

Both Fernandez and Diallo are great options for that cheap midfield slot, but Amad’s form seems more sustainable given he is a natural attacker.

Amad has provided five assists and one goal, in only five appearances under Ruben Amorim.

United’s new manager is clearly a big fan of the Ivorian.

Amad has played the full 90 minutes in four of those outings, making a winning contribution late on against Manchester City in the derby last Sunday.

    Price: £5.2m Points: 65 Gameweek 17 fixture: Bournemouth (h)

Leicester’s Christmas fixtures must have been hand-picked by the Grinch.

They face Liverpool away on Boxing Day, host Manchester City (ok, that one might be fine), on the 29th and then take on Aston Villa at Villa Park in the New Year,

But before then, they play Wolves at the King Power. Ruud van Nistelrooy could hardly have picked a better fixture given their current state.

Vitor Pereira’s immediate concern will be plugging a defence that has leaked a league-leading 40 goals already.

It would be some feat if he can transform their defence immediately, though, which could be good news for Jamie Vardy’s FPL backers.

The veteran has rolled back the years by producing six goals and three assists for the Foxes.

He has performed particularly well at home lately, scoring three times and setting up another in his last four appearances.

    Price: £5.6m Points: 67 Gameweek 17 fixture: Wolves (h)

    Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest)

Brentford have been fantastic at the Gtech this season, so much so that with 22 points they have the best home record in the Premier League.

However, a free-scoring attack more than a stingy defence has been behind that good form.

The Bees have netted 24 times at home, more than any other club, but have also conceded 14 which is the fourth-worst record in the league.

Their tendency to open up could play into Nottingham Forest’s hands considering how dangerous they are on the counter-attack.

Chris Wood is the obvious Forest player to target, but Morgan Gibbs-White is also worth considering.

The attacking midfielder has produced 21 points in the last two gameweeks, scoring once and providing two assists.

    Price: £6.3m Points: 45 Gameweek 17 fixture: Brentford (a)

    Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

Alexander Isak is a man in red-hot form with three goals, two assists and 30 FPL points to show for his last three Premier League appearances.

The Swedish striker is the best-performing forward in FPL right now which bodes well for Newcastle’s trip to Suffolk this weekend.

Ipswich have conceded 12 goals in eight Premier League matches at Portman Road and rank fifth-bottom for expected goals against (13.2) in home games.

Isak has scored in three of his last four away fixtures and with the Tractor Boys yet to keep a clean sheet on home turf, you would back him to continue his purple patch on Saturday.

    Price: £8.7m Points: 80 Gameweek 17 fixture: Ipswich (a)
