REPORT: Jets Owner Nixed Trade Because of Player’s Madden Rating

Just when you think the Chicago Bears have cornered the market on bizarre NFL stories, the New York Jets remind you of their existence.

I did not have NFL owner putting the kibosh on a trade because of a player’s rating in a Madden video game on my 2024 NFL BINGO card. Did you?

Here is an excerpt from reporting by The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, Dianna Russini, and Michael Silver on why the trade between the Jets and Denver Broncos that would have sent Jerry Jeudy from Denver to New York fell apart despite an extended round of negotiations:

The Broncos felt a deal was near. Then, abruptly, it all fell apart. In Denver’s executive offices, they couldn’t believe the reason why.

Douglas told the Broncos that Johnson didn’t want to make the trade because the owner felt Jeudy’s player rating in “Madden NFL,” the popular video game, wasn’t high enough, according to multiple league sources.

Nearly seven months after fumbling a Jerry Jeudy trade, the Jets ended up swinging a deal for Davante Adams to pacify Aaron Rodgers. Meanwhile, Jeudy (who was traded from the Broncos to the Cleveland Browns in March) has set new career highs in catches (70) and receiving yards (1,052) en route to earning Pro Football Focus’ 27th-best grade among wide receivers.

Meet the Jets, an NFL franchise run as (if not more) chaotically than the Bears

Even though the video game anecdote grabbed my attention, reading the rest of the story put some things into perspective as a Bears fan. Most notably, the fact that Chicago’s football team isn’t the only one being run as chaotically as possible. These excerpts made me feel like I was living in an alternate reality:

“They keep on doing the same thing over and over: they change the football people. The football people are not the issue,” one former executive said. “It’s, ‘Hey, I have brain cancer.’ And, ‘Well, just cut off your foot.’” “There are organizations where it is all set up for you to win,” said a player with the team in 2023. “It feels completely different (with the Jets). It’s the most dysfunctional place imaginable.” “Your job becomes managing Woody,” a current team executive said. “That’s not unique for an NFL GM — the difference here is that not only are you managing Woody, but you have to manage all the people who influence him. That could be family, that could be media, that could be people in the building.”

Reading about an NFL team’s spiral into full-on dysfunction is far more entertaining when it isn’t the team you write about daily. But still … I could not shake the feeling that the things said about the New York Jets could apply to the Chicago Bears. There is probably something to be written about people in power who don’t have a sense of the reality around them ruining a good thing for everyone. And if it were to be written, the author has a wonderful starting point with how the Jets and Bears are being managed.

In the end, I can’t believe I read words in a story about an NFL team, and I really can’t believe it wasn’t a story about the Bears. Then again, I shouldn’t be all too surprised. Is there anyone out there who believes Virginia Halas McCaskey or her son George is even aware of the Madden video game or video games in general? The McCaskey clan probably still plays with an Atari. Not judging, by the way. Old-school video game consoles rock. It’s just that things have evolved. I just wish my favorite football team would follow suit.
