Trade Machine Fun: Three Deals to Get Zach LaVine to the Nuggets

Let me make something clear, I am not a trade machine guru. As much as I enjoy dabbling in the arts, I’m nothing more than a dog at the park. I’m merely looking to have some fun before returning to my comfy spot on the court.

This is why you should take my trade proposals below with a grain of salt! With rumors surfacing about the Nuggets’ “significant” interest in Zach LaVine, I decided to map out three possible deals. All three work financially and were crafted using Fanspo’s trade machine.

Does this mean I think any will actually get done over the next couple of weeks? That’s a different story, especially the two that have three teams involved. But I still had fun doing it, and I encourage you to share your best trade ideas or tear mine apart!

WOW: Zach LaVine Drawing “Significant” Interest From the Denver Nuggets

    Three Zach LaVine Trade Ideas

    Trade 1

Bulls get … Michael Porter Jr., Zeke Nnaji, Julian StrawtherNuggets get … Zach LaVine, Torrey Craig

If the two sides are motivated to get a deal done, this is probably the easiest way to go about it. Michael Porter Jr. and his $35.9 million paycheck this season has to be included to make the money work. Throw in Zeke Nnaji’s contract, and this is enough to get the green light.

With that said, Nnaji’s four-year, $32.0 million deal currently looks like an eyesore. And he’s only in the first year of that contract! Porter Jr.’s injury trouble is also a major concern, particularly when we consider the $79.0 million owed over the next two seasons. This is why I would at least hope the Bulls could convince Denver to throw in an additional asset. Julian Strawther might be asking for too much, but the 22-year-old wing out of Gonzaga was a favorite of mine in the 2023 NBA Draft. He is the prototypical 3-and-D wing with great athletic pop and solid finishing skills. Landing a second-year riser like him in this trade would undoubtedly feel like a win.

Nevertheless, if the Nuggets refuse to add in one of their young role players, the Bulls might still be better off simply accepting Porter Jr. and Nnaji in return. Keeping their 2025 first-round pick and diving first into a youth movement should be the overarching goal; this deal would still help with that.

    Trade 2

Bulls get … Tim Hardaway Jr., Isaiah Stewart, Future Top 8 Protected First-Round Pick via PistonsNuggets get … Zach LaVine, Torrey CraigPistons get … Michael Porter Jr., Zeke Nnaji, Future Second Round Pick via Bulls

The Detroit Pistons are attempting to take a step in a competitive direction this season. Likewise, they’ve popped in and out of trade rumors over the last year or so as they look to strengthen their roster around Cade Cunningham. So why wouldn’t they consider adding a sharpshooter with playoff experience who still fits their timeline? Don’t answer that.

In this deal, I have the Bulls sending out a second-round pick since the Pistons are the squad to take on Nnaji’s four-year deal. At the same time, assuming the Pistons want in on MPJ, I have them sending out a Top 8 protected first-round pick. Since the Nuggets are the ones ending up with the best player in the deal, though, I have that selection ending up in Chicago. The Bulls also deserve something extra for taking on Isaiah Stewart’s contract. While it doesn’t feel nearly as bad as Nnaji’s, Stewart has a long way to go to prove he can live up to a four-year, $60.0 million deal (team option in final year).

    Trade 3

Bulls get … D’Angelo Russell, Zeke Nnaji, Gabe Vincent, Max Christie, Two Future Second Round Picks (via Lakers), 2031 Protected First Round Pick (via Nuggets) Nuggets get … Zach LaVineLakers get … Michael Porter Jr., Torrey Craig

You know we had to get the Lakers involved! Recent reports have suggested that the Lakers may target a glorified role player over a big fish, and who is to say Michael Porter Jr. doesn’t fall into that category?

In this deal, the Bulls become a salary dumping ground. They end up with two horrible contracts in Nnaji and Gabe Vincent (two years, $22.0 million). We also see them finally take D’Angelo Russell off the Lakers’ hands before sending him into free agency this summer. For their participation, as well as a veteran in Torrey Craig, they receive a young wing in Max Christie and two future second-round picks from the Lakers.

To be sure, the Nuggets still have to pay up for getting the best player in the deal, which is why I have them sending a protected future first-round pick to Chicago. I’m thinking something along the lines of a Top 10 protection.
