Last night the Capitals saw their 10-game road win streak end and then had some travel headaches trying to get out of Dallas. The Blackhawks have been home since Sunday and didn’t practice on Monday. Unfortunately, that meant the Blackhawks would not(!) score first in this game.
Pierre-Luc Dubois took the puck, easily skated around Louis Crevier and slid a puck under Arvid Söderblom that barely crossed the line for the game’s first score. Andrew Mangiapane danced around TJ Brodie nine minutes later and beat Söderblom and the Blackhawks trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes despite allowing only five shots on goal. The frustrating thing is: the numbers actually liked the Hawks in the first. They out-attempted Washington 22-12, out-shot them 9-5 and out-chanced them 11-4 in the first period.
The second period happened. At least the box score says it did. The paper tells me the Blackhawks had (checks notes again) three(!!) power plays in the second period and did nothing with them. After 40 minutes of hockey the Blackhawks had allowed 11 shots on goal and trailed 2-0.
And then HOLY **** the third period happened. WOW!
Star 1: Teuvo Teräväinen
After posting two assists in eight games, Teräväinen had three points on Sunday and came back with an assist on Tuesday night. He’s warming up, which is great because he was supposed to be part of the veteran supporting cast that took pressure off the young guys to put goals on the board. He added another assist on the Brodie goal that tied the game. And another assist on Donato’s go-ahead goal.

After an underwhelming second period that saw the Blackhawks waste three power plays, they opened the third period short-handed. Mikheyev scored a showtime goal on the PK to cut the lead in half. After curing insomnia for 40 minutes he woke up the entire United Center. He added an assist on the game-tying goal.

Shoutout to Brodie for getting walked for a goal earlier in the game and then coming back with the game-tying goal.
