One of the classic ingredients in a plain sugar cookie is vanilla extract. I mean no disrespect to vanilla extract, but truthfully I've had trouble knowing if the addition of was making any difference in improving my cookies. So one day, I stopped adding vanilla extract in my cookies and cakes and switched to a bold, fragrant substitute that took my baked goodies to the next level: Japanese whisky.

    What is Japanese Whisky?

    House of Suntory

I am a huge fan of Japanese whisky. The spirit stands out for its meticulous craftsmanship and perfectly balanced flavors. In crafting their own whisky, the Japanese learned from Scotch whisky traditions but added their own spin.

Japnese whisky is fragrant, aromatic, smoky and floral—all flavors that really shine when added to sugar cookie dough. You won’t need a lot of it—about one tablespoon per batch of cookies.

A good bottle of Japanese whisky certainly doesn’t come cheap (one of my favorite bottles, Hibiki Harmony Japanese Whisky, costs about $70 before tax). That being said, using a tablespoon of the spirit doesn’t feel like breaking the bank, compared to when I use a tablespoon of real vanilla extract. These days, a tiny bottle of vanilla extract costs anywhere from $10 to more than $30!

How to Make Sugar Cookies with Japanese Whisky

Incorporating Japanese whisky into your sugar cookie dough is relatively straightforward, and almost any bottle of Japanese whisky will work. Each brand of whisky has different flavor notes, so just use one that you enjoy drinking. Japanese whisky’s beautiful notes will add depth and complexity to your next batch of sugar cookies with little effort.

Once you choose your Japanese whisky, you’ll need a sugar cookie recipe. Swap in the whisky for the vanilla extract in the recipe. It's as simple as that! For added whisky flavor, you can brush the dough balls with a little of the spirit before they go into the oven and brush them with some whisky immediately out of the oven too. It's a fun way to give your holiday cookies a little grown-up flavor.

Speaking of grown-ups, Japanese whisky is a fun thing to pair with your holiday cookies. You can sip the whisky neat or on the rocks or use it in a cocktail, like an Old Fashioned. It's a great way to put the spirit in holiday spirit.
