Bears Head Coach Search: Joe Brady is a Strong Candidate

The Chicago Bears will have a new head coach in 2025. And like the team that fired Matt Eberflus on Black Friday, we’re getting an early start on the search with this series that will profile potential head coaches for the franchise that resides at Halas Hall.

I made it pretty clear that Ben Johnson was my top choice for the Chicago Bears head coaching vacancy when I profiled him recently, so I won’t pretend throughout this series that I prefer another coach to the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator. However, I will say that Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady is a close second. Perhaps even a 1B.

Brady’s stock is at an all-time high thanks to his work with the Buffalo Bills in recent seasons, and he has a background that includes work with quarterbacks Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Drew Brees, and wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, and Chicago’s own DJ Moore. He’s also worked under the likes of Sean McDermott and Sean Payton.

At first blush, his résumé is as good as any.

But paper doesn’t win football games, and it doesn’t develop franchise quarterbacks. So, let’s look deeper into his background and what he brings to the table and answer one big question.

    Joe Brady’s Coaching History

Offensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills (2024-Present) Interim Offensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills (2023) Quarterbacks Coach, Buffalo Bills (2022-23) Offensive Coordinator, Carolina Panthers (2020-21) Passing Game Coordinator & Wide Receivers Coach, LSU (2019) Offensive Assistant, New Orleans Saints (2017-18)

Joe Brady’s Coaching Origins and Influences

Joe Brady’s latest stop at Buffalo involved a little bit of luck. When former Bills OC Brian Daboll departed to become the head coach of the New York Giants, and quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney followed, Sean McDermott needed to replace his top offensive voices in the building around his star quarterback, Josh Allen. McDermott hired Ken Dorsey as his new offensive coordinator but needed to replace Tierney with a new quarterbacks coach. However, former third-string quarterback Davis Webb, not Brady, was McDermott’s first choice.

While an official offer was never made, it was widely reported that the parties mutually understood that if Webb agreed, the quarterbacks’ coach job in Buffalo would be his. Instead, Webb opted to take a one-year deal worth $1.03 million to follow Daboll to New York and serve as a backup quarterback.

That opened the door for Brady, who was unemployed after being fired by the Carolina Panthers, where he served as their offensive coordinator under former head coach Matt Rhule. Brady’s time in Carolina isn’t the brightest spot on his résumé, but none of us hit a thousand.

During his time in Carolina, Brady worked with quarterbacks Teddy Bridgewater and P.J. Walker in 2020 and Sam Darnold, Cam Newton, and Walker in 2021. Despite Brady not having the best quarterbacks to work with in Carolina and the turbulence with Rhule’s tenure as head coach, Brady was interviewed for head coaching jobs by five different NFL teams after the 2020 season. Brady interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Jets, and Philadelphia Eagles.

Before his time in Carolina, Brady made a stop at LSU, serving as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach for arguably the best offense in college football history. Brady worked with Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson in Baton Rouge. Joe Burrow threw for 5,761 yards, Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,414 yards, and Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson recorded 1,780 and 1,540 yards, respectively.

Brady was 29 when he worked for Ed Orgeron at LSU, and while he had one of the most dynamic groups of offensive weapons a college coach could have, he was a big part of LSU’s season, winning the Broyles Award as the nation’s top assistant coach. Before LSU, Brady worked under Sean Payton in New Orleans as an offensive assistant for two seasons. The Saints posted a 24-8 record when Brady was in New Orleans.

The most impressive part of Brady’s résumé has been his time with the Bills, where he’s helped Josh Allen turn in a career year, and the Bills become a bona fide Super Bowl contender this season.

How does Joe Brady fit (or not) the Chicago Bears plans in 2025 and beyond?

Brady took over for Ken Dorsey when Dorsey was fired last season and helped turn the Bills offense around as they rode a late-season surge into the playoffs. Brady leaned into the rushing attack, reduced Stefon Diggs’ targets (which ultimately led to Diggs being traded in the offseason), and got other receivers more involved, creating a balance within Buffalo’s offense on the fly, with the team facing the possibility of missing the playoffs.

Buffalo’s offense has been Brady’s this season. They’re second in the NFL in scoring (less than a point behind the Lions). Last weekend, Brady bested fellow head coaching candidate Ben Johnson in a matchup in Detroit. The two hottest offensive-minded coaches scored a combined 90 points.

Josh Allen has 3,395 yards, 25 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 103.5 passer rating with 484 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. The last time Allen finished a season with a passer rating north of 100 was in 2020; that was the only time he accomplished that feat. The interception has always been the only knock on Josh Allen, with him throwing 18 last season and posting double-digit interception totals in five of his first six seasons. Allen has just five interceptions this season.

Brady’s commitment to the rushing attack and a more balanced passing attack has made Allen’s life easier. He no longer needs to make excessive “hero ball” plays that inflated his interception totals. That sounds like something Caleb Williams would greatly benefit from. Balancing the distribution of targets between a group of talented pass catchers and improving the rushing attack check the boxes the Bears’ next head coach/offensive mind has to do.

    One Big Question

Is Joe Brady a beneficiary of the talent he’s worked with, or is it the other way around?

When I look at Joe Brady’s success, you can’t miss the fact that he’s worked with some incredible offensive weapons. So, it’s fair to ask whether he was the beneficiary of elite playmakers in his offenses or whether he helped elevate these talented playmakers.

Here are a few things to consider:

Teddy Bridgewater’s best season came under Brady in 2020 when Bridgewater threw for 3,733 yards and 15 touchdowns in 15 games with the Panthers. Joe Burrow sat for two seasons at Ohio State before transferring to LSU. He threw for 2,894 yards and 16 touchdowns during his first season at LSU in 2018 before Brady arrived. Justin Jefferson was at LSU in 2018 and caught 23 passes for 313 yards in 13 games. Justin Jefferson was also at LSU in 2018 and caught 54 passes for 875 yards in 13 games. In 2018, Clyde Edwards-Helaire rushed for 658 yards on 146 attempts for the LSU Tigers. With Brady in the mix in 2019, those four players saw monumental year-over-year increases in their production, and three of them (Burrow, Jefferson, and Edwards-Helaire) were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft, with Chase becoming a first-round pick the following season.

Then there’s Josh Allen, who has long been an elite NFL quarterback but is enjoying his best season under Brady. Allen is also on pace to have one of the lowest passing attempt totals of his career and one of his lowest rushing attempt totals. Josh Allen has never been more efficient than he is this year under Brady.

The answer is that Brady—like many other offensive coordinators turned head coaches—has experienced the luxury of working with elite offensive playmakers. But he’s elevated those players’ outputs at every stop.

That is a scenario I would be thrilled with if he can do the same with Caleb Williams in Chicago.
