Following clarification of a miscommunication between the owner of Harpoon Henry’s and Dana Point Harbor Partners and landlord, Burnham-Ward Properties, the nearly 50-year-old seafood eatery will extend its closing date until summer of 2025.
Restaurant founder Robert Mardian, Jr., who also owns nearby Wind & Sea, had originally pegged Tuesday, Jan. 28 as the final day for Harpoon Henry’s. The restauranteur had cited revenue and construction issues connected to the harbor’s ongoing multimillion-dollar renovation as the reason for the January closure.
But after a meeting with Bryon Ward of Dana Point Harbor Partners, Mardian said in a written statement that “Mr. Ward provided his commitment to support harbor tenants in anyway possible including, if necessary, rent abatement and he has indeed made good on those promises.”

His early closing announcement came before he met with Ward to discuss alternative outcomes. “I am happy to share we have since reached an outcome that allows Harpoon Henry’s to remain open until the start of the next phase of construction next summer which will ultimately require the building’s demolition,” he said.
Mardian went on to note, “After our call, I also now appreciate that he and his team needed time to properly evaluate financial information provided by us to support our requested rent reduction, which not only affects Dana Point Harbor Partners, but also the rental revenue that they pay to the County of Orange.”
Harpoon Henry’s, which opened in 1975, will remain open until the start of the next phase of construction happening in the summer of 2025, which will require the building’s demolition to make way for new developments. Nearby businesses like Scoop Deck Ice Cream and Coffee Importers, will also close temporarily during the demolition process.

The Dana Point Harbor’s $550 million refresh will bring new hotels, parking structures, restaurants, architecture and landscaping to the 52-year-old harbor. During a phone interview, Ward said that, once completed, the harbor “will have more new restaurant spaces than we have now.”
The coastal enclave’s renovation will feature seven new buildings spanning roughly 100,000 square feet with patios, indoor-outdoor venues, communal outdoor spaces with firepits and seating areas, food events, markets and more.
