The Chicago Bulls announced on Tuesday morning that Chris Duarte will head down to the G League.
The 27-year-old wing has appeared in only 12 games this season, averaging a mere 4.2 minutes per contest. The Bulls acquired Duarte in the offseason sign-and-trade that saw DeMar DeRozan land with the Sacramento Kings.

The question now is how long will Chris Duarte stay with the organization’s G League affiliate. Considering the team’s next game is not until Thursday, there is a possibility we hear the Bulls call him back up over the next 48 hours. This is especially true when we consider Josh Giddey may have to miss some time after suffering an ankle injury against the Toronto Raptors.
With that said, I’m not sure anyone would be shocked if Duarte remains with the Windy City Bulls through the week. The fourth-year player out of Oregon has struggled to make his presence felt at the NBA level over the last couple of seasons. He started strong with the Indiana Pacers during his rookie campaign, averaging 13.1 points and 4.1 assists over 59 games played. Unfortunately, his sophomore season was riddled with injury trouble and proved to be a lot less successful. Indiana opted to send him to Sacramento in the offseason.
The fresh start didn’t lead to better results. While he appeared in a career-high 59 games, he only averaged 3.9 points on 38.1 percent shooting from the field in 12.2 minutes per contest. Now, if he wants to prove he belongs on an NBA roster after this season, he has a lot of work to do.
For what it’s worth, there was a lot to like about Duarte coming out of Oregon. He may not be the most explosive athletically, but he has great positional size and strength that he can use to finish strong at the rim and box out for rebounds. Add in a sold three-point jumper, and he has the kind of versatile skillset that could fit on a lot of NBA benches. Still, he hasn’t been nearly as efficient as many hoped coming into the league, and the defense has certainly appeared a step slow at times.
Perhaps an extended Windy City stint can give Duarte a chance to figure some things out. The team will play their next two games at the G League Winter Showcase in front of NBA execs and scouts, so now could be a great time to boost his value ahead of free agency.
