If you’ve had it up to here with the Chicago Bears, know you are not alone.
Bears tight end Cole Kmet didn’t mince words in his postgame interview after Monday Night Football. Check it out via Watch Marquee:
“You’ve gotta take care of your own sh*t … and if other people aren’t doing their job, that’s on them.”Cole Kmet on the Bears’ lack of execution. pic.twitter.com/S46AV3Twg5
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) December 17, 2024A transcription of Cole Kmet’s words for those of you who cannot watch with the sound on:
“I think what I’ve learned through it all is just like you’ve got to be on your own sh—. Trying to get other guys to do certain things or other people to do certain things it takes away from your own preparation. So you’ve gotta take care of your own sh— and just do your job. And if then if other guys aren’t doing their job or other people aren’t doing their job, like, that’s on them. And then you have to figure out how you’re going to handle that, too.
But at the end of the day, you’ve just got to take care of your job and do what you have to do to prepare the right way. But we obviously just haven’t executed enough. Usually, that’s what it comes down to in these NFL games.”
Not only are those honest words from one of the Bears’ captains, but they are also words that are worth taking to heart.
Cole Kmet is playing through what is looking like a lost year
You would like to think that Cole Kmet’s teammates would see the “C” on his jersey, hear what he is saying, take it to heart, and want to follow in his footsteps. And perhaps some are doing so even as a lost season is reaching its final stretch run. With that being said, there is an old saying about how you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink, which is fitting for this moment.
This isn’t the first time Cole Kmet has been vocal about others around him not doing their job. So, while he can speak on it as much as he wants if players aren’t willing to take what he says as a message to get better, there isn’t much more Kmet can do. You can set an example and do your best, but it doesn’t mean someone who isn’t as motivated as you are will heed your guidance and do the same.
Dec 8, 2024; Santa Clara, California, USA; Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet (85) drops a 2-point conversion attempt during the third quarter against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Kupbens-Imagn ImagesIn the end, I am reminded of how the Bears culture — which was once much-ballyhooed coming into the season — has been deteriorating as the year has trudged along. That it has fallen apart so quickly in Chicago is rather damning. Seeing this team spiral since the Fail Mary loss to the Washington Commanders makes me think that every veteran leader on this roster needs to be analyzed deeper in an attempt to get to the bottom of what plagues this team.
CHICAGO BEARS WEEK 17: MNF Hangover | 24-Hour Rule
I can wash away one listless stinker after a coach’s dismissal. But two? With the second coming in front of a nationally televised audience on Monday Night Football against a division rival? I can’t go for that. This is a cause for concern in my book and a red flag that shines so brightly that even I — a recovering ignore of red flags — cannot ignore it.
