A KROGER customer was left fuming after a recent self-checkout incident at their local store.
They questioned the supermarket chain about its policies, one of which made their transaction much longer than expected.
“Really @kroger?” the shopper, Jake, wrote in a post to X earlier this month.
“I scan to buy 4 items at your self checkout and I have to wait around for one of your employees to okay it?”
“What’s the logic behind that?” he questioned.
Jake argued that the requirement of having Kroger employees verify purchases before customers leave effectively “defeats the purpose of making the self checkouts ‘speedy.'”
Kroger was quick to respond to and apologize for the situation.
“Thank you for reaching out, and we’re very sorry to hear about your store experience,” its X account replied.
“This is not the experience we want our customers to have.”
The supermarket chain asked that Jake reach out through a private message with more details on the specific Kroger location to resolve the issue.
KRO-NO
It’s unclear if that ever happened, but its one of many complaints from customers that has left Kroger apologizing in recent months.
Another frustrated shopper blasted Kroger’s return policy as “painful” after they tried to return some clothes.
“They say system doesnt work / need to return at store we purchased,” the customer, Shyam, wrote on X.
“If I ask, can manager help – agent says – no use- need to fix your systems.”
Kroger promised Shyam it would pass along their concerns to the Store Leadership Teams.
Others have cited similar complaints with self-checkout as Jake, claiming they encountered a “20 min saga” of waiting or that only “2 registers” were left open during a holiday shopping rush.

Kroger also now faces a lawsuit from Albertsons after its proposed $24.6 billion merger with the competitor fell through.
First confirmed in 2022, the deal immediately encountered blowback and a separate suit from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which argued that it would result in higher prices on goods for American consumers and decreased competition among supermarkets.
This month, US District Judge Adrienne Nelson agreed with the FTC, temporarily blocking the merger.
The day after, Albertsons officially backed out of the deal and filed its lawsuit against Kroger, claiming it didn’t make its “best efforts” and take “any and all actions” to get regulatory approval.
Kroger and Albertsons’ merger would’ve created the biggest supermarket conglomerate in United States history.
A shopper at Kroger also criticized the supermarket chain for a “Walmart experience” at the gas station recently.
Another claimed there was a “cart shortage” at their local store.
