MNF Hangover, New Coach Candidate Rankings, Amegadjie’s First Start, and Other Bears Bullets

A pithy zinger reflecting on last night’s Bears loss on Monday Night Football goes here. If one does not pop up, then this will serve as a suitable intro for Tuesday’s Bullets.

At the risk of jumping the gun, I think we can cross Thomas Brown off of the Chicago Bears head coach candidates list. Perhaps he will get an interview as a token of the franchise’s appreciation for guiding this collection of misfit toys to the finish line. He deserves that much after being put in an unenviable position. Nevertheless, there hasn’t been anything that has happened over the last two weeks that makes me think he is The Guy for the long haul. And I am unsure if anything can move me off my stance in the season’s final games.

WEEK 17 RECAP: Why Ugly Losses Keep Mounting / Player Grades From MNF

Promises made, promises kept: Last week, I said I’d dedicate one Bullet to ranking my preferred Bears coaching candidates. This is where things stand in my book after Week 15: 1) Ben Johnson, 2) Joe Brady, 3) Mike Vrabel, 4) Liam Coen, 5) Brian Flores. NOTE: Patrick has his own preliminary ranking of potential Bears head coaching candidates. I encourage you to give that a read as you go about forming your own opinions on who should be running the show in 2025 (and beyond). Kliff Kingsbury drops off the list because I am growing more intrigued by Liam Coen, his offense, and his coaching arc. Vrabel slides down two spots because Johnson and Brady have offensive styles that play to their quarterback’s strength. Flores remains on the list after hearing the MNF crew talk about how he helped clean up the mess on defense he inherited. Ed Donatell’s Vikings defense finished 28th in points and 31st in yards allowed in 2022. Two years later, Brian Flores has that group ranking fourth in points and 13th in yards. At a minimum, the Bears should interview Flores to see if they can latch on to his secret sauce. Are we sure Thomas Brown can’t call offensive plays as the Bears head coach from the booth? I don’t care that it isn’t considered normal. When has doing things in a normal fashion been something the Bears do? When has the idea of “that’s not how things are done in modern football” ever stopped the Bears? Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images On the one hand, Minnesota waiting until February to hire Kevin O’Connell in February is a sign that patience pays. But on the other hand, you have to consider the luck involved because O’Connell became their top candidate after the Jim Harbaugh thing fell through. Maybe we should see that as a sign that it is better to be lucky than good. The Bears are neither right now. I hate watching the Bears knowing that Caleb Williams can’t afford to make a single mistake. Every quarterback misfires on passes. But the feeling I get when Caleb misses a throw is the football equivalent of missing Big Foot walk down the street because I was looking at an Adam Schefter push notification about a team I don’t care about on my phone. Every misfire feels like the end of the world because so much needs to go right for the Bears to make something good happen that repeatability feels impossible. Meanwhile, opposing QBs miss a throw and it isn’t a big deal because the next down provides a fresh opportunity. Doug Kramer has now fumbled at the goal line (which caused the Bears to lose out on a touchdown) and committed a stupid penalty to take a score off the board. Maybe the Bears should not have cut their fullback back in October. Kramer took responsibility for failing to report (h/t @mattzahnsports) but that doesn’t make me feel any better. A weird realization: The Bears haven’t won since cutting Khari Blasingame. A weirder realization: The Bears haven’t won since cutting Velus Jones Jr, which happened on the same day. There is much to be written about the Bears offensive line. But this needs to be said right now: I don’t think Bears GM Ryan Poles envisioned Kiran Amegadjie playing this year. And I don’t think he imagined he would be the team’s starting left tackle after an offseason in which he spent most of the spring recovering from an injury and a chunk of the summer on the PUP list. I think the lesson here is that you never have enough depth along the offensive line. Bears QB Caleb Williams / Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-Imagn Images This should have been a redshirt year for Amegadjie. And maybe it would have been had the O-line not had injuries to depth players like Nate Davis and Bill Murray. Matt Pryor should be that swing tackle, but he is forced to start at guard because Nate Davis turned out to be a complete zero. I don’t think you can predict the injuries. But there should have been more Nate Davis insurance based on how things went last year and this summer. These Tory Taylor stats are worth sharing: The rookie punter ranks 12th in punting average (48.6 yards) and ninth in punts inside the 20 (25). If the Bears are going to continue punting as often as they have this season, then I will root for the rookie to finish in the top 10 in each of these categories. Sometimes, a headline (like this one from the Sun-Times) says everything you need to know: Bears’ foolishness lives on long past Matt Eberflus This line from Dan Wiederer’s column (Tribune) hits close to home: “Public service announcement: Things can get worse. And if the last two months offer any indication, they probably will. And all of a sudden, I’m thinking of this classic moment from The Simpsons:
