The Blackhawks understandably did not practice on Monday after playing a back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday with travel in between. With a game tonight against the hot Washington Capitals, it will be interesting to what lineup changes are in store after the mix won a game on Sunday. Captain Nick Foligno missed the game because of illness. And Louis Crevier tapped in for Wyatt Kaiser.
I’m interested to see if Ryan Donato is available for the Blackhawks tonight. He had a big hit in the third period on Sunday night and went to the bench appearing to favor his right arm/wrist. He had an assist on the game-winner but still appeared to be hurting the rest of the third period. I asked interim head coach Anders Sorensen about him after the game and was told he’s okay. But I’m interested to see if he’s available tonight.
Connor Bedard became the fifth @NHLBlackhawks player in the past 10 years to score a game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation and the first since Patrick Kane (59:43 on Feb. 27, 2019).#NHLStats: t.co/d2M82jyyfT pic.twitter.com/hKIYyIHepI
— NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) December 16, 2024 Because, somehow, there are still people complaining about the Blackhawks’ goaltendng this season, I share this graphic. The Blackhawks have received better than expected — and better than average — goaltending all year from all of their goaltenders. And we’re still (somewhat patiently) waiting for a celebrity guest appearance from Laurent Brossoit…Which teams have gotten the best goaltending this season? Here???s a visual I made for total Team Goals Saved Above Expected, using GSAx figures from @EvolvingHockey pic.twitter.com/J2r2Q5CKKf
— Jesse Granger (@JesseGranger_) December 16, 2024 He’s making ridiculous progress, but it doesn’t sound like we’ll see Alex Ovechkin in the game for the Capitals tonight when they visit the Blackhawks. Washington was in Dallas last night and their 10-game road win streak came to an end.Alex Ovechkin traveled with the Capitals and took part in this morning's pregame skate. Still in a non-contact jersey and just in skating drills. Spencer Carbery said this morning the next step will be to shed the non-contact jersey; didn't give a timeline for that.
— Bailey Johnson (@BaileyAJohnson_) December 16, 2024 Yesterday I wrote about all of the buzz online about the Sabres potentially shopping center Dylan Cozens (and the Blackhawks potentially making a call). The Sabres’ owner and GM spoke with their players on Monday. Are we buying this as a legit vote of confidence, or…. ?Sources indicate #Sabres players met with owner Terry Pegula and GM Kevyn Adams today in Montreal.Summary of message: ???We believe in you. The solution is within this room.???Pegula professed faith in Adams, Ruff, and apparently told players to not expect a big trade.
— Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) December 16, 2024 Which, while we’re on the subject, one wild trade concept was thrown out on Monday’s “32 Thoughts” podcast. Elliotte Friedman quickly backpedaled and said he was merely spitballing, but he threw out a Cozens and Bowen Byram for Elias Pettersson deal. He did say the Canucks and Sabres have talked. And David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period has reported a few times that the Sabres did inquire about Pettersson last year before he signed his long-term extension in Vancouver. But man… that would be wild. To be clear: the deal Friedman threw out there was merely a “what if” — NOT a deal that’s been proposed. And it does NOT tell us what Buffalo might want/ask for in a deal for Cozens. So speculating that the Blackhawks would throw out a Nazar-Korchinski-[add whatever former first-round pick’s name] + future 1st and/or multiple other top prospect package feels like a big swing and a miss. The Sabres need functional assets to help them in the immediate, but likely want assets that have some term attached (which is what I wrote on Monday). Young NHL players and veterans with term make sense; prospects with potential is what they’ve been living on for the last decade so the idea of Nazar-Korchinski-prospects misses the point. And, as I pointed out, it’s hard to see how the Blackhawks would be able to help their NHL needs now and into the immediate future (read: next 1-3 years) that stack up against what another team might package to get a player like Cozens. Another honor this week for Blackhawks prospect Sacha Boisvert. So, how did the Cubs landing Kyle Tucker impact any Nico Hoerner-Mariners buzz? Bulls forward Josh Giddey got hurt and needed help off the floor last night. The Bears suck. And lost again last night. Matt gave out some player grades. Thankfully, this semester is almost over… Read More Details
