Aaron Rodgers is the latest celebrity to detail his experience with ayahuasca, but what exactly did the Super Bowl champion sign up for by taking the drug?
“I would say that with other psychedelics, you go in thinking this is going to be a good time. I hunker down, like, ‘OK this is going to be tough,'” Rodgers explained in his three-part Netflix documentary, Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, which hit the streaming service in December 2024.
In Enigma, the New York Jets quarterback invited viewers on an ayahuasca trip with him, documenting his experience while he was in Costa Rica in 2023 during the NFL offseason. Rodgers also admitted that this was the ninth time he's taken the drug across four different trips.

"It's the hardest medicine possible that I've tried," he revealed. "It's a deeply intense spiritual journey."

The main active chemical in ayahuasca is a substance called dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which is illegal in many countries, including most of Europe. Though it is illegal in the United States and Canada, it is allowed for religious use in both countries.
