A Vietnam War veteran, Mr. Pete Gibbs age 85 of Mount Juliet, died peacefully at the Tri-Star Summit Medical Center in Hermitage where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit Friday afternoon December 7th suffering from complications of a debilitating stroke and was pronounced deceased at 7:54 a.m. Saturday morning December 14, 2024.

Mr. Gibbs is at the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home where his funeral services will be conducted on Thursday afternoon December 19th at 1 p.m. with Pastor Roger Grisham officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Everlasting Life at the Smith County Memorial Gardens.

    The Gibbs family will receive friends at Sanderson in Carthage on Wednesday afternoon December 18th from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Thursday morning after 11 a.m.

    American Legion Post #57 of Carthage will conduct military chapel services.

    Born Henry Wilson Gibbs, always lovingly known as “Pete”, in Carthage, on August 13, 1939, he was the second of seven children, five daughters and two sons of the late Douglas Wilson Gibbs who died February 16, 1955 at the age of 37 and Cora Bell Smith Gibbs Hardcastle Comstock who died January 3, 2000 at the age of 79.

    Siblings preceding him in death were Carolyn Louise Gibbs Grisham who served as Smith County Circuit Court Clerk for twelve years and died at the age of 85 on December 14, 2022, exactly two years to the day before Pete, Helen Loneta Gibbs Crawford who also served as Smith County Circuit Court Clerk for the twelve years following her sister Carolyn, and died November 22, 2022 at the age of 81, Patty Sue Gibbs Huddleston who died November 28, 2007 at the age of 60 and Clarence Odell “Bucky” Hardcastle who died December 2, 2015 at the age of 59.

    Mr. Gibbs was a member of the 1958 graduating class of Smith County High School and majored in math and foreign languages. He was in the Latin club his freshman and sophomore year, the Spanish club the senior and the final three years at S.C.H.S. he was in the Beta Club and received scholastic honors his senior years.

    The statement made of him in the ’58 annual was; “Let me tell the world”.

    He received his medical technology degree from Southern Academy of Clinical Technology in Nashville and his radiology degree from the Radiology Institute.

    He was inducted into the United States Army in Nashville on April 18, 1963 and was honorably discharged from Fort Wolters Army Base in Mineral Wells, Texas on April 17, 1965 with the rank of Specialist 4th Class.

    For his unselfish service to our country, he was awarded the M-16 Marksman Badge, a letter of Appreciation and a letter of Commendation for his untiring efforts in treating injured Vietnam soldiers when they were returned to stateside.

    He was a charter employee at the former Donelson Hospital in the laboratory department and when Hospital Corporation of America constructed the TriStar Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, he was awarded the position of supervisor of the lab department.

    In 1978 he was awarded the first prestigious Thomas Frist Award given to the most outstanding H. C. A. employee in the system which recognized his proficiency in going above and beyond what was expected of an H.C.A. employee.

    Mr. Gibbs had no children and is survived two sisters Joan Gibbs House and husband Kenneth of the Brush Creek Community, Leah Justine Gibbs Lewis of Carthage two brothers-in law, Gene Crawford of the New Middleton Community and Fred Grisham of the Rock City Community.

    The Gibbs family has requested memorials to St. Jude Childrens Hospital.
