NWS: Drier weather this week as another storm brews for the weekend

The flooded highways were open again by Monday morning and sun had returned to the forecast for the rest of the week, but the National Weather Service was also warning of another storm brewing for this weekend that will likely bring a particularly heavy dose of rain to northern Mendocino County.

“Stay tuned; this late week/next weekend storm could pack a wallop,” staff at the Eureka office of the NWS wrote in their Forecast Discussion for Dec. 15, explaining that while “generally dry weather” was expected mid-week, “another deep low pressure system is forecast to approach toward the end of the week (Friday) and will most likely have greater impacts in terms of heavier precipitation and strong winds into next weekend.”

By Monday morning, NWS staff explained that while “there continues to be high ensemble confidence in a stronger storm system this weekend, the ensemble mean has both shifted slightly later into the weekend and further south. Specifics remain highly variable, but models are currently resolving two pulses of moisture over the weekend, (with the) mostly likely rainfall amounts (ranging) from two to seven inches, depending on elevation, with the highest amounts focused in northern Mendocino County.”

As for the rest of Monday, the NWS forecast called for “light to moderate rain and gusty south wind to dissipate through the evening. Calmer and drier weather will build through midweek before another atmospheric river system this weekend.”

Also on Monday, the California Department of Transportation reported that all of the “State Routes” in Mendocino County were open again, including the previously flooded Highway 1 at the Garcia River, Highway 128 at the Navarro River, and Highway 175 near the Russian River in Hopland.

The NWS forecast for the next few days was:

Monday night: A 40-percent chance of rain, mainly before 10 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 42. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Tuesday Patchy fog before 1 p.m. Otherwise, partly sunny, with a high near 62. Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 66. Calm wind. Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Saturday: Rain. Cloudy, with a high near 58. Sunday: Rain likely. Patchy fog. Otherwise, cloudy, with a high near 58.
