The Chicago Bulls could be without their leading scorer in Toronto.
The latest official injury report lists Zach LaVine as questionable for this evening with back spasms. LaVine first ended up on the injury report with this issue before Friday night’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Yet, the Bulls had him listed as probable and proceeded to play him just under 34 minutes of action. LaVine went on to score 13 points on 4-11 shooting.
To be sure, Chicago didn’t need a great LaVine night against the reeling Charlotte Hornets, but the stat line still suggested he may not be at 100 percent. This is why I wouldn’t necessarily be stunned if the team chooses to give LaVine the night off, especially with two significantly tougher matchups against the Boston Celtics coming up this week.
Dalen Terry is the only other Bulls player currently listed as questionable. He was forced to leave the team’s Dec. 8 loss to the 76ers with a knee injury and didn’t end up playing in the victory over Charlotte. Fortunately, it doesn’t appear as if the injury is anything serious.
As for Nikola Vucevic, who missed Friday night’s game with an illness, the Bulls have upgraded him to probable. While they were able to make do without the big man against Charlotte, things would have likely proven tougher against the team up north. Toronto holds the third-highest rebounding percentage in the NBA and averages the third-most second-chance points. Without Vucevic, the Bulls would be missing some much-needed size against Jakob Poeltl and forwards Jonathan Mogbo and Chris Boucher.
The Raptors are far more bang-up than the Bulls. The team is missing two of their top three players, as both Scottie Barnes and Immanuel Quickley have sustained injuries that will cause them to miss multiple weeks. This has forced RJ Barrett to do a lot of the heavy lifting, while it’s also allowed second-year wing Gradey Dick to pick up some of the scoring load. Regardless, the Raptors’ 7-18 record has a lot to do with their injury troubles, and the Bulls will look to take advantage of their short-handed starting lineup tonight.
