The 3 o’clock hour has been a rough one for the Chicago Bears.
Shortly after pressing publish on the post sharing the news of left tackle Braxton Jones being ruled out for the team’s Week 15 game on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, the door on the Bears’ faint playoff hopes was slammed shut at the end of the Saints-Commanders game.
This is how the Bears’ playoff hopes died:
WOW…The Saints scored a TD with ZERO seconds left to get within a point of Washington! They go for two and the win and… pic.twitter.com/1cIJTJ1kvy
— FOX Sports: NFL (@NFLonFOX) December 15, 2024Kudos to the Saints and their interim head coach for having the guts to go for two and the win with the game on the line. It didn’t work out for them in the end, but it was the right call.
As for the Bears, the hits keep coming. Last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers clinched the team’s fourth consecutive losing season. Ouch. If the Bears lose to the Vikings on Monday, the 2024 campaign will mark the team’s eighth year with 10+ losses since the start of the 2014 season. Double ouch. The Bears have just four non-losing seasons and one winning season since firing Lovie Smith after the 2012 season. Triple ouch.
Where are the Chicago Bears in the reverse standings?
This is what the top of the 2025 NFL Draft order looks like after Sunday’s noon slate of games (via Tankathon):
New York Giants (2-12) Las Vegas Raiders (2-11) Carolina Panthers (3-11) Jacksonville Jaguars (3-11) Tennessee Titans (3-11) Cleveland Browns (3-11) New England Patriots (3-10) New York Jets (4-10) CHICAGO BEARS (4-9) New Orleans Saints (5-9)With just four games left in the season, the Bears could climb into the top 5 with a little good fortune. I hate that we have reached this point. But we’re here and there is no use in running away from it.
This year was supposed to be different. As a fan, I feel as if we were lied to by a front office and coaching staff that sold us a bill of goods entering this season. Or maybe they didn’t and this team is better than what its record indicates. After all, ESPN’s preseason projections ranked Chicago’s roster 17th among 32 teams. Considering that projections are soulless and numbers-based, I see the Bears’ failure to live up to these projections as a reflection of poor coaching and in-game management. However you want to slice it, the results in 2024 are unacceptable.
A strong finish to the end of the 2023 season, a fresh start at quarterback, and projected upgrades at several key positions filled us with hope. And a 4-2 start had us feeling good. But the Bears haven’t won since returning from London. And when this season officially comes to a close, the franchise will turn its full attention to hiring a new head coach. The toxic cycle of doom continues.
