The tragic assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on December 4, 2024, in Midtown Manhattan has shocked both the corporate world and the public. Thompson was shot twice—once in the back and once in the leg—just outside the Hilton hotel, where he was set to speak at an investor conference. The incident has been characterized by police as a premeditated and targeted attack, rather than a random act of violence. Surveillance footage captured the suspect lying in wait before executing this heinous act .
Thompson was shot to death at point-blank range in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning before he was set to attend an investor conference, according to police.
The masked gunman, who remains on the loose, carried out a "brazen, targeted attack" that was "premeditated," NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference. But the motive remains unknown, police said.
Thompson was pronounced dead less than half an hour after the incident, and the search for the gunman, who fled into Central Park, continues Thursday.
Police are combing through surveillance video and examining clues the gunman may have left while fleeing the scene.
The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were found on the shell casings discovered at the scene of the shooting, ABC News reported, citing police sources.
CNN has reached out to the New York Police Department, who declined to comment.
Citing law enforcement briefed on the investigation, the outlet added that it is believed that the suspect may have taken a subway from the Upper West Side to Midtown Manhattan. Investigators are reportedly trying to determine whether or not the assassin had an electric bike pre-positioned in the area to likely escape on after the shooting.
Police said the gunman was wearing a black hoodie and black pants and carrying a gray backpack. It is believed he used a firearm with a silencer, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC.A food cart vendor near the scene told NBC News that he did not hear any gunshots but saw police vehicles and two helicopters in the area.
NYPD Crime Stoppers has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.
The manager of a parking garage across the street from the hotel told CNN he was inside his office at the time of the shooting and did not hear gunshots.
