November 16, 2024 (NEW YORK) – More than 343,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Sudan’s Al Jazirah state in less than a month due to escalating violence, the United Nations said on Friday, warning of a dire humanitarian situation. The attacks on civilians erupted in eastern Al Jazirah on October 21 when Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commander Abu Aqla Keikal defected to the Sudanese army, triggering retaliatory attacks against civilians by the RSF.
