During surgery, a bacterial infection set in, leading to a rare and painful condition that damaged the cartilage in his knee and made a return to the sport impossible.
Cucalón did not surrender easily. For two years, he fought valiantly to overcome his health challenges, undergoing numerous treatments and enduring significant physical and mental strain in pursuit of recovery. In his heartfelt letter, he expressed the toll the infection took on his health and his ability to engage in even light exercise.
