Tony Todd, Horror Icon, Dies at 69

Tony Todd, the renowned character actor celebrated for his roles in the "Candyman" and "Final Destination" horror franchises, passed away at the age of 69. He died on November 6 at his home in Los Angeles, as confirmed by his manager, Jeffrey Goldberg, to "Entertainment Weekly". Goldberg expressed his sorrow, stating, "I regretfully can confirm that my dear friend and client of over 30 years Tony Todd has passed away. What an amazing man, and I will miss him every single day."

Todd first gained significant acclaim in 1992 when he portrayed the ghost of a murdered Black artist in the iconic horror film "Candyman," a role he reprised in three sequels. His performance left a lasting impression on audiences and solidified his place in horror cinema.

Virginia Madsen, Todd's co-star in "Candyman," shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, writing, "My beloved. May you rest in power sweet to the sweet in heaven." She reflected on his passing, saying, "The great actor Tony Todd has left us and now is an angel. As he was in life."

Born in 1954 in Washington, D.C., Todd grew up in Hartford, Connecticut. He pursued his passion for acting at the Eugene O'Neill National Theater Institute and the Trinity Rep Conservatory. In addition to his film career, he was an accomplished stage actor, featuring in numerous productions on and off Broadway, and he lent his voice to various animated series, films, and video games.

Goldberg highlighted Todd's warmth and dedication, noting, "Those who knew him will remember his warm laugh, generous spirit, and his dedication to his craft. Whether on stage, on screen, or in personal conversations, Tony brought an unyielding honesty that resonated deeply with his friends, family, and fans."

In a video tribute, Madsen expressed her grief, stating, "I don't know what to say right now." She praised Todd as a "truly poetic man" with "a gentle soul and a deep knowledge of the arts." She humorously referenced their film, saying, "I will miss him so much and hope he haunts me once in a while. But I will not summon him in the mirror!"
