The former North Carolina state treasurer, state senator and Raleigh City Council member defeated four challengers in the nonpartisan contest to lead North Carolina’s capital city. With all precincts reporting, Cowell had 59.77% of the vote to 18.39% for Paul Fitts, 11.34% for Terrance Ruth, 6.43% for Eugene Myrick, and 3.60% for James L. Shaughnessy IV, according to the State Board of Elections. Cowell stepped away from politics in 2017 after eight years as treasurer to pursue a career in the private sector.
