Enzo Zidane, the eldest son of football legend Zinedine Zidane, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 29. This decision comes after a decade-long journey that included stints at various clubs such as Real Madrid Castilla, Alaves, and Lausanne. Despite showing promise early in his career, Enzo faced challenges related to consistency and injury that ultimately shaped his trajectory . His solitary appearance for Real Madrid’s senior team, where he scored on debut, remains a highlight amidst a career that did not meet the lofty expectations set by his father's legacy.
His only appearance for Los Blancos' senior side came in the Copa del Rey during the 2016/17 season, where he scored on his debut.
His outing in the 6-1 win over Cultural Leonesa was also the same game in which Martin Odegaard made his debut for the club.
And their careers have taken on hugely different paths, with Odegaard going on to captain Arsenal where he is now one of Europe's top playmakers.
Enzo followed his father's footsteps and played for Juventus and Real Madrid's youth sides before making his senior professional debut for Los Blancos in 2016. He later played for clubs like Aves and Almeria before joining Spanish third-tier side Fuenlabrada in 2023 on a one-year deal. After appearing in 29 matches across all competitions in the 2023/24 campaign, the midfielder decided to bring the curtain down on his career at the age of 29.
Zidane moved to Alaves in 2017 before joining Lausanne Sport in the Swiss Super League the following year when Alaves terminated his contract.
He’d score two goals in 16 appearances in Switzerland before making temporary stops in the Segunda Division in Spain and the Portuguese top flight.
In 2021-22, he played for Ligue 2 side Rodez, making 15 appearances that season as they narrowly avoided relegation. His final stop was in the Spanish third tier, known as the Primera Federacion, where he’d score once in 28 appearances for Fuenlabrada.
Luca Zidane is currently Eibar’s starting goalkeeper, Theo Zidane plays midfield for Córdoba in the third tier, and the youngest, Elyaz Zidane, recently joined the Real Betis academy and represents France at the U-17 level.
