Manchester United agreed to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli for £25 million

In recent developments within the realm of professional football, Manchester United has reportedly agreed to sell midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli for a fee of £25 million. This transfer marks a significant moment in both the player's career and the strategic direction of Manchester United as they seek to revamp their squad. McTominay, who has been with the club since his youth days, has established himself as a competent player in midfield but has often been overshadowed by more illustrious names within the squad.

The decision to sell McTominay can be viewed through various lenses, including financial strategy and team dynamics. From a financial perspective, recouping £25 million for a player who may not consistently fit into the starting eleven is an astute move for Manchester United. The funds generated from this transfer could potentially be reinvested into acquiring new talent or enhancing existing player contracts, thereby reinforcing their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions.

The Red Devils have brought in Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui this summer as the INEOS era gets underway at Old Trafford.

McTominay, a Manchester United academy product who has scored 29 goals in 255 games for his boyhood club, came off the bench for the final 11 minutes of United's 2-1 loss at Brighton on Saturday.

He has entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford, with United holding the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.

While United are not dependent on a sale in order to recruit Ugarte, a Uruguay international, the hierarchy’s preference is to bring in extra funds before doing so.

McTominay, who scored 10 goals last term, has been with United since junior school. His debut came under José Mourinho in May 2017 as a substitute in a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal and he has made 255 appearances for United, scoring 29 times.

Manager Erik ten Hag still wants to strengthen his squad and knows McTominay's status as a homegrown player creates more flexibility within the Premier League's financial rules.

United have a keen interest in Paris St-Germain's Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte but so far have been unable to reach a deal with the French club.
