The founder and CEO of Telegram, Pavel Durov, was arrested at a French airport on multiple charges, raising significant concerns regarding the implications for digital privacy and freedom of expression. Durov's platform has garnered considerable attention as a communication tool that upholds user privacy through end-to-end encryption. OFMIN, a part of the national directorate of the French judicial police, had placed an arrest warrant on Durov, a French-Russian dual national, due to lack of cooperation with law enforcement and suspected complicity in drug trafficking, pedo criminal offenses, and fraud, according to TF1.
Durov, 39, was said to have been arrested at 8pm French time, having flown in from Azerbaijan. The warrant on Durov was only valid if he was on French soil. As a result, TF1 reported that Durov traveled via the UAE, former Soviet countries and South America to avoid arrest in Europe. He also reportedly avoided traveling through countries where Telegram is under surveillance.
One of the investigators told AFP they were surprised Durov entered France despite the warrant against him, adding “enough of Telegram’s impunity”.
With its desirable encryption features, Telegram, whose user base is close to one billion, was created by Durov and his brother in 2013 in Russia.
He fled the country in 2014 and travelled across the globe to search for a home for his company, including the German capital, Berlin, and San Francisco in the United States.
Telegram is ranked as one of the major social media platforms after Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok and Wechat.
Mr Durov founded Telegram in 2013 and he left Russia in 2014 after refusing to comply with government demands to shut down opposition communities on his VKontakte social media platform, which he sold.
