Alain Delon, a titan of French cinema, has passed away at the age of 88, marking the end of an era in which he captivated audiences with his striking performances and undeniable charisma. Born on November 8, 1935, in Sceaux, France, Delon's rise to stardom began in the late 1950s and continued through the golden age of European film. His contributions to cinema are profound, as he starred in numerous iconic films such as "The Samurai," "Rocco and His Brothers," and "Le Cercle Rouge," each showcasing his exceptional range as an actor.
Delon was not only recognized for his acting prowess but also for his distinctive looks that epitomized French masculinity during his time. He became a symbol of style and sophistication both on-screen and off-screen. His collaboration with renowned directors like Visconti and Melville solidified his status as one of the most influential actors in world cinema. The actor was a star of the golden era of French cinema, known for his tough-guy persona on screen in hits including The Samurai and Borsalino.
"He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family," a statement released to AFP news agency said, adding that the family had asked for privacy.
In 1960, Italian filmmaker Luchino Visconti cast him in Rocco and His Brothers – a profound social realist work about the travails of a family from rural southern Italy, as they try to make their way in the industrial north – which was crowned with a grand jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. Two years later, an even more renowned Italian director, Michelangelo Antonioni, directed Delon in Eclipse – winning yet another grand jury prize, this time at the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1963 Delon starred as the Prince of Salina’s beloved, charismatic nephew Tancredi in Visconti’s lavish adaptation of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s masterpiece The Leopard. This time, the film won the Palme d’Or.
"Alain Fabien, Anouchka, Anthony, as well as (his dog) Loubo, are deeply saddened to announce the passing of their father. He passed away peacefully in his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and his family," the statement said, adding the family has asked for privacy.
