Biden explains why he dropped out of the 2024 race White House

In a recent announcement that reverberated through the political landscape, President Joe Biden articulated his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. This unexpected move has prompted extensive analysis regarding its implications for both the Democratic Party and the broader electoral environment. Biden's rationale, which centers on a combination of personal and pragmatic considerations, sheds light on the complexities of contemporary political dynamics in the United States.

Biden cited several key factors influencing his decision. Foremost among them is his recognition of the increasing polarization within American politics, which has made it increasingly challenging to garner bipartisan support for critical issues such as healthcare and climate change. By stepping aside, he aims to facilitate a new wave of leadership that may be better equipped to navigate this divisive landscape. Furthermore, Biden emphasized his commitment to ensuring that the Democratic Party remains competitive in an evolving electoral field marked by shifting voter demographics and priorities.

Speaking on the CBS News Sunday Morning programme, Biden said: “The polls we had showed that it was a neck-and-neck race, would have been down to the wire … But what happened was, a number of my Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate thought that I was gonna hurt them in the races.”

Biden said that amid the backlash against him, he began to worry that his health would dominate election discussions for any Democratic candidate.

"And I thought it'd be a real distraction," the president said.

Biden didn't name any specific senators or House representatives who raised their concerns with him. But multiple reports said that a significant number of Democratic heavyweights, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, had sought to pull the president off the ballot.

Trump commented at a rally in March that it would “be a bloodbath for the country” if he loses, however his campaign has repeatedly said he was referring to the economy and the auto industry and that Democrats have taken the quote out of context.

At the same time, the former president has repeatedly insisted, without evidence, that he was cheated out of victory in 2020 and has warned that there will be attempts to “rig” the vote this year. He has pledged to pardon some or all of the people convicted for rioting at the US Capitol in January 2021.

Mr Biden said he would be campaigning on behalf of Ms Harris and that he had spoken to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro about touring the state. Mr Biden was born in the working-class city of Scranton, about 120 miles (190km) north-west of New York City.
