The remarkable progress made towards a vaccine for COVID-19 has much of the world feeling hopeful. The prospect of a light at the end of the tunnel is encouraging, but health leaders around the world must reckon with the reality that distrust in vaccines is pervasive and on the rise. If this distrust leads to limited vaccine uptake, it would render advances and investments nearly useless. While there are several proposals circulating about how to fairly distribute vaccines, a crisis in trust points to deeper concerns that also demand attention.
