Staten Island is the center of Donald Trump’s support in New York City. Leading up to the election, the island, where I live, was full of enthusiastic Trump supporters, proudly displaying their favorite MAGA flags. Much like the voters of deeply red states, they denounced this summer’s Black Lives Matter protests, were appalled by the motto “defund the police” — and many questioned the legitimacy of the COVID lockdowns. One thing’s for certain: Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio are not well-liked amongst the 62% of Staten Islanders who voted for Trump.
