It is with great sadness that the golf community mourns the passing of PGA Tour two-time winner Grayson Murray at the young age of 30. Murray, known for his talent and skill on the course, leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered by fans and fellow golfers alike.
Murray's career in professional golf was marked by moments of brilliance and triumph. His two victories on the PGA Tour were a testament to his dedication and hard work in honing his craft. Murray's passion for the game was evident in every swing he took, inspiring those around him to strive for greatness.
Murray - citing an illness - withdrew Friday during the second round of the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, CBS Sports reported.
PGA officials said grief counselors will be made available at all venues this week and will release more information as it becomes available.
Condolences began to pour out soon after the news of Murray's death was made public.
“Grayson was the absolute best. Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend,” his caddie Jay Green said in a statement, according to Golf Channel’s Brentley Romine. “He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.”
Murray’s agent Kevin Canning said in a statement to CNN, “We are saddened and heartbroken to learn about the sudden passing of Grayson Murray. Grayson has been a longtime member of the GSE family and hearing the news this morning shocked all of us.”
And in an X post, former Masters winner Bubba Watson said he was “very sad” to learn of Grayson’s death.
“I was just hugging you at the Masters, telling you how proud of you I am,” he recalled. “Thankful to have known you. My deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. He will be missed.”
At the Sony Open, he recalled that first year on the PGA Tour. “I was young and thought I was invincible — wasn’t doing the correct stuff off the course to really give myself the best chance to succeed out here,” he told reporters.
Last year, he found success again on the Korn Ferry Tour, placing fourth and earning back his spot on the PGA Tour.
In January, he credited sobriety and his supportive family for helping him feel “more at peace inside the ropes.”
Murray, who had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, made a massive turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting wedge to 3 feet for birdie on the final hole to get into a playoff and winning it with a 40-foot putt.
