The Baltimore Orioles suffered a disappointing loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, marking their third consecutive defeat and their first sweep of the season. The final score of 5-4 reflects a close game, but ultimately the Cardinals emerged victorious, leaving the Orioles reeling from yet another setback in what has been a challenging season.
The Orioles' inability to secure a win against the Cardinals highlights their struggles both offensively and defensively. Despite putting up a valiant effort, they were unable to overcome the strong performance of their opponents. This defeat serves as a reminder of the importance of consistency and execution in every aspect of the game.
It also ended a remarkable run by the Orioles, who hadn't been swept in 106 consecutive regular-season series, a streak that dated to May 13-15, 2022, when they were swept by the Detroit Tigers. The 106-series sweepless streak is the longest in AL history and tied for the second-longest in MLB history with the New York Giants of 1903-05.
In sweeping the Orioles, the Cardinals protected the franchise's own MLB record. St. Louis went 125 consecutive regular-season series without being swept from 1942-44. Those Cardinals won World Series titles in 1942 and '44.
It’s unclear how Brandon Hyde will approach his pitching set-up for the one. Kyle Bradish tossed the first five innings on Tuesday. He won’t be back on the mound today, but the entire bullpen should be available. Cole Irvin might be able to step in if they need length. He threw just 13 pitches on Sunday, and it’s unclear when he will next be used in a starting capacity.
Winning both games today would be significant. The Yankees lost to the Mariners last night, so there is a half-game to be picked up in the standings if the Orioles take care of business against a sub-par Cardinals team.
Kyle Bradish allowed one run on four hits in five innings. He struck out six.
The Orioles capitalized on an error in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 1. Kyle Stowers reached base on a ball that bounced off Nolan Gorman’s glove for an error and scored on Jorge Mateo’s double to left field.
Masyn Winn extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a double down the right field line in the bottom of the fourth.
“He controls the barrel extremely well,” Marmol said. “Making that conscious decision to use the whole field and not try to go pull side has allowed him to do exactly that, just take what the game has given him, and he’s done a really nice job. That's a tough at bat.”
The O's still figure to be one of the best teams in all of baseball this year and should be contenders for the American League pennant, so this is likely just a blip on the radar, but they'll want to get right this weekend against the woeful Chicago White Sox, who have the worst record in baseball entering play on Wednesday.
