Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton has been making headlines recently as he goes to the brink of Euro 2024. Wharton, known for his exceptional skills on the field, has been a key player for both his club and country.
With his recent performances catching the eye of national team selectors, Wharton has earned a call-up to represent his country in the upcoming European Championships. His inclusion in the squad is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport.
As he prepares for one of the biggest tournaments of his career, Wharton is focused on helping his team achieve success on the international stage. His experience playing at the highest level will be invaluable as he competes against some of the best players in Europe.
The boy wonder completed a club record move to Crystal Palace soon after and has graced the Premier League stage during the second half of the season, producing a string of eye-catching performances.
His outstanding displays haven’t gone unnoticed by Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, who has today included the 20-year-old in his initial 33-man squad for a pre-tournament training camp.
the England boss named five uncapped players in his 33-man selection, while established Three Lions veterans like Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling were nowhere to be seen.
There was passing interest in Wharton from Wolves, Everton and Bayern Munich – and Palace’s old rivals Brighton looked closely. Tony Bloom has created arguably the greatest value-for-money acquisition club in the game. Dougie Freedman, Palace’s director of football, identified Wharton as a player capable of receiving the ball in tight spaces and taking out opponents with his passing range. Steve Parish, the club’s chairman, sanctioned the deal. In the end, the total cost to sign Wharton was just £18 million.
He started inauspiciously on his debut against Brighton on Feb 3, caught in possession for the turnover that led to the first goal in a 4-1 defeat. But since then he has made extraordinary progress. As Palace took 19 points from their last seven games, Southgate was there to watch Wharton in the 4-0 win over Manchester United at home on May 6. His assistant Steve Holland came to Selhurst Park to watch the final day 5-0 demolition of Aston Villa.
As for Eze, who ended the season in sparkling form and won his first senior caps last year, making the cut would be particularly poignant. Three years ago, the attacking midfielder discovered he was part of Southgate’s provisional squad for the postponed Euro 2020 immediately after injuring an achilles during a Palace training session and being ruled out for several months. Now he and England’s other Eagles have their opportunity to take flight.
