On a chilly night in Edmonton, the Oilers faced off against the Canucks in what was expected to be a thrilling matchup. However, the game quickly turned into a one-sided affair, with the Canucks dominating from start to finish.
The Canucks' offense was firing on all cylinders, with players like Elias Pettersson and Brock Boeser showcasing their skill and scoring prowess. The Oilers, on the other hand, struggled to keep up and were unable to find their rhythm throughout the game.
The Vancouver Canucks can advance to the Western Conference Final for the first time since 2011 with a win against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Western Conference Second Round at Rogers Place on Saturday.
“This is going to be the hardest game we’re ever going to play, until the next game,” Canucks coach Rick Tocchet said Saturday. “It’s never easy, I don’t care how well you’re playing, the hardest game is the next game.”
Vancouver took the series lead with a 3-2 win at home in Game 5 on Friday. Center J.T. Miller scored the winning goal with 33 seconds left in the third period to break a 2-2 tie.
Skinner, 25, started the Oilers' first eight playoff games with a 5-3 record, including 4-1 in the first-round series against the Los Angeles Kings. He has a 3.23 goals-against average and a save percentage of .877 in the postseason.
In the regular season, Skinner appeared in 59 games (57 starts) and had a 36-16-5 record, 2.62 GAA and a .905 save percentage.
Pickard stopped 19 shots in the Oilers' Game 4 victory while allowing three goals on 35 shots in their 3-2 loss in Game 5 to the Canucks.
Knoblauch said after Game 3 that Skinner would return to the lineup at some point, and that point was Saturday.
Now he and the Oilers are just a win away from the conference finals.
"I think obviously, to start off, I think Calvin was amazing when he got put in," Skinner said. "Definitely got the job done and kept us in it. An unbelievable teammate. For me, I was able to get a little bit of rest and just work on my game and feel good about it again. I was able to come out and do what I had to do."
The victor in the series between Edmonton and Vancouver will face the Dallas Stars in the Western Conference Final; the Stars advanced after eliminating the Colorado Avalanche with a 2-1 double-overtime win in Game 6 of the second round on Friday.
