London Marathon breaks one-day fundraising record and runners raise £40mn

The London Marathon has once again proven to be a beacon of hope and generosity as it broke its one-day fundraising record, with runners raising an incredible £40 million for charity. This remarkable achievement showcases the power of community and the determination of individuals to make a difference in the world.

The marathon, which took place on Sunday, saw thousands of runners take to the streets of London to raise money for various charitable causes. From local charities to international organizations, every pound raised will go towards making a positive impact on those in need.

Chester Mojay-Sinclare, founder and chief executive of Enthuse, added: "It's such a special day for the sector and we're delighted for all the charities that will benefit from the public's generosity."

More than £40m has been donated via JustGiving with donations via TCS surpassing £27m.

This year’s event, which took place yesterday (21 April), also saw a record number of more than 53,000 people participating in the race, London Marathon Events said.

Of the more than £67m raised so far by the latest event, £27m has been raised via Enthuse, the London Marathon’s official online fundraising platform.

JustGiving said a further £40m had been donated so far through its online fundraising platform.

The mental health charity Samaritans, which is the London Marathon’s official charity of the year for 2024, has raised more than £980,000 from the event so far, the charity’s website shows. Samaritans has already received donations from 675 fundraisers and more than 20,000 donors.

Hugh Brasher, event director for the London Marathon, said: “The 2024 TCS London Marathon broke many records over the weekend and this fantastic news from Enthuse and JustGiving means that we have already broken our own world record  as the world’s biggest one-day annual fundraising event. That is a wonderful achievement and huge thanks to every single person involved.

“The total will continue to grow as many donations come in after the event weekend, so we will announce the final total in the coming months.”

As we applaud the winners and all participants of this year's London Marathon, let us also celebrate the spirit of unity and camaraderie that this event embodies. The record may have been broken, but the true victory lies in the journey taken by each runner towards reaching their personal best.
