Notre Dame College, a beloved institution with a rich history in sports, has announced that it will be closing its doors after the spring semester. This news comes as a shock to many who have followed the college's impressive athletic programs over the years.
Founded in 1922, Notre Dame College has been a powerhouse in sports such as football, basketball, and track and field. The college has produced numerous championship teams and standout athletes who have gone on to achieve great success at the collegiate and professional levels.
From 2014 to 2022, total fall enrollment at Notre Dame declined nearly 37%, from 2,281 students to 1,444, according to federal data.
College officials said that they made many efforts to remain open, including fundraising, refinancing debt, and tapping into federal and state pandemic relief. But efforts were not sufficient to close budget gaps and fulfill debt obligations, they said.
“We are all saddened by the need to make this decision, but rest assured that as we move forward, we are doing everything we can to ensure a smooth transition for our students to continue their education,” John Smetanka, interim president of Notre Dame, said in a release.
All Notre Dame students will be guaranteed admission to Hiram College with no application fee. Hiram will provide 100% transfer of all credits granted by Notre Dame toward an equal or comparable degree program. Hiram will ensure that students will have the same timeframe to graduation as they had when in a similar program at Notre Dame.
Additional details will be coming in the following days, but we can make one simple promise to NDC students right now: we’re committed to securing your future as a college graduate, welcoming you into JCU’s phenomenal network of conscientious students, faculty, staff and alumni, and doing everything in our power to make your transition seamless.
The South Euclid, Ohio-based school joined the league when it was formed in 2013. Another Ohio school and MEC member, Urbana University, closed in 2020.
In August, Alderson Broaddus University ceased operations due to financial difficulties.
In January, the MEC extended an invitation to Point Park University in Pittsburgh to join the league. They will do so in July as they make a transition from Division III to Division II.
