February 29, 2024 (JUBA) – South Sudan’s leaders must take steps necessary for credible and peaceful elections free from violence in December, a U.S official said. The statement came from Peter Lord, the United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Africa during his recent visit to South Sudan from February 28-29. Lord said violence should not be a tool for political competition during elections “Failure to do so would be a collective failure for which those leaders would share responsibility,” he said.
