The game between Houston and Iowa State was a highly anticipated matchup, with both teams coming into the contest with high expectations. The game started off as a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to gain a significant advantage in the first half. However, in the second half, Iowa State began to pull away, thanks to their strong shooting and tough defense.
Houston fought hard to stay in the game, but ultimately fell short as Iowa State's lead proved insurmountable. Despite the loss, Houston showed resilience and determination throughout the game, never giving up until the final buzzer sounded.
Houston took over sole possession of first place in America’s toughest basketball conference. The Cyclones fell to 20-6, 9-4. Houston is 23-3, 10-3.
This was only the third time in Iowa State history that the Cyclones were involved in a road game involving two top-10 teams (the others: losses to Kansas in 1957 and 1997).
Iowa State led at the half, 31-21, and won the game 57-53. Houston shot 30% from the field (6/20) and 30.7% from deep (4/13) in the first half, while Iowa State was slightly better (44% from FG, 28.5% from 3).
That was one of the most physical games of the season between two of the three top-ranked defenses in the nation. While Iowa State will semi know what to expect, the atmoshophere will be something that should get to the Cyclones.
Texas was Houston's lone matchup last week, but it couldn't have come at a better time. Last week's No. 2 team in the nation - Purdue - fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes for its third season loss. That was enough to give the Cougars a leap to No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 and Coaches polls, matching their highest season ranking from Week 10.
What Houston couldn't earn on Monday was a first-place vote in either poll. The UConn Huskies became the first unanimous No. 1 team in the AP poll this season. They also earned every first-place vote in the Coaches poll.
K-State shot 1-of-15 from three in the last game and needed 29 free-throw attempts to stick around in a home loss to TCU. I don’t expect the Wildcats’ shooting to look much better in a road game at Texas on Monday after playing at home on Saturday.
