At the 2024 People's Choice Awards, music legend Lenny Kravitz was honored with a special tribute for his contributions to the industry. The iconic rock star has been a staple in the music world for decades, known for his soulful voice and electrifying performances. As he took the stage to accept his award, the audience erupted in applause and cheers, showing their appreciation for his talent and influence.
Kravitz humbly thanked his fans and supporters, expressing gratitude for being able to do what he loves every day. He reflected on his journey in the music industry, from humble beginnings to international stardom, and encouraged aspiring artists to never give up on their dreams.
The 59-year-old rocker — who broke out thanks to 1989's “Let Love Rule” — took to the stage at the awards ceremony in Santa Monica, California, to play a medley of hits from his incredible career, including his breakout hit, "Fly Away," "It Ain't Over 'til It's Over," "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and the more recent single "TK421."
The crowd erupted in cheers for Kravitz before he accepted the "incredible" award from Victoria Monét, 34, and said in his speech that part of the word "icon" means "daring to be different" and being yourself instead of something "inauthentic" for money.
More than 35 years ago, before the 11 albums, 40 million records sold, and four Grammys won, Kravitz was a wanted man. And many of those guidance officers, they wanted to change him. “When I was first coming up a lot of people offered me a lot of deals but they wanted me to change. My music wasn’t black enough, it wasn’t white enough. It didn’t fit nicely inside a box. Or sound like what was on the radio at the time,” he explains. “And I turned down the money and the glitzy promises of fame and stardom because I couldn’t live with myself doing something inauthentic.”
An icon, he considers, “is someone who inspires and teaches others to believe in themselves and their direction whatever that direction is.”
Kravitz also performed a medley of tunes at the event, including “Fly Away,” “It Ain’t Over Til It’s Over,” “Let Love Rule,” “Are You Gonna Go My Way,” and “TK421” from his upcoming album, Blue Electric Light, dropping May 24.
Kravitz is a newly announced nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame class of 2024. Inductees will be announced in late April, with the induction ceremony set to take place this fall in Cleveland. The ceremony is set to stream live on Disney+, followed by a highlights special airing later on ABC.
