On a fateful day in 2024, the golf world was shocked when Tiger Woods was carted off the course during the Genesis Invitational. The legendary golfer, known for his dominance on the course, was seen clutching his back in pain before being escorted to a waiting ambulance.
Speculation ran rampant as to what could have caused Woods' sudden exit from the tournament. Some suggested it was a recurrence of his previous back injuries, while others speculated that he may have suffered a new injury during play.
Woods' early departure came due to illness, according to Woods' camp, and not his physical state. The 48-year-old was dealing with back spasms down the stretch of his first round Thursday, and he was noticeably limping while walking into the clubhouse and playing his second round Friday.
hough the PGA Tour noted that Woods was having back spasms earlier in the day, the golfer confirmed Feb. 17 that he withdrew from the tournament after a flu diagnosis.
“I would like to confirm that I had to withdraw from @thegenesisinv due to illness, which we now know is influenza,” Woods posted on X. “I am resting and feeling better. Good luck to the players this weekend. I’m disappointed to not be there and want to thank @GenesisUSA and all the fans for the support.”
Woodland said he noticed Woods being quieter than normal, though they all were trying to make sure they were among the top 50 to make the cut.
"I feel bad for him. He wasn't right," Woodland said. "He definitely was trying to fight through it and I hope he's all right."
The 48-year-old Woods still managed to create quite a spectacle at Riviera.
Woods acknowledged he was dealing with back spasms for the final three holes of his opening round on Thursday. However, Dusabek said Woods’ back was not the reason behind his withdrawal.
“Not what we’re being told by him right now,” Dusbabek said. “I’m sure that’s part and parcel to the reason but he’s not feeling well he’s feeling ill right now.”
Woods has said he hoped to play one tournament a month this year.
The Genesis Invitational continues through Sunday. Patrick Cantlay currently leads, sitting at 10-under for the tournament.
