The NFL has announced that Las Vegas Raiders' quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be suspended for two games due to a violation of the league's personal conduct policy. The suspension comes after an incident in which Garoppolo was involved in a physical altercation with a teammate during practice.
This news has sent shockwaves through the football world, as Garoppolo is considered one of the top quarterbacks in the league. His absence will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the Raiders' upcoming games and their playoff aspirations.
The policy violation is said to be related to Garoppolo using a prescribed medication without having a valid therapeutic use exemption from the league, according to sources.
Garoppolo will not appeal the suspension and will miss the first two games of the 2024 season, per sources.
Sources said the Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, when he would earn an $11.25 million roster bonus. Garoppolo also has an $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 season that now could be voided because of the suspension.
Garoppolo said after the season he wanted to be able to play again somewhere.
“I’m pretty open,” Garoppolo said at the time. “A lot of things are out of my control. I’ve had situations like that before, so as a player, you’ve got to roll with the punches a little bit. Whatever happens, I think it all happens for a reason. You’ve got to make the best of your situation.”
The Raiders still have major decisions to make at quarterback.
Jimmy Garoppolo has done the Raiders a huge favor.
By stumbling into a two-game suspension for violation of the PED policy, Garoppolo has given the Raiders a quick and easy escape from $11.25 million in fully-guaranteed salary for 2024.
His contract makes a suspension under the PED policy one of the mechanisms for voiding the guaranteed payment in the second year of his three-year contract.
The Raiders likely would have cut him before his $11.25 million roster bonus became due next month, recognizing that they would owe him the $11.25 million salary, minus whatever he would have earned elsewhere in the coming season.
Garoppolo, 32, will hit an open market lacking in high-upside veterans. While the QB will serve a two-game suspension to start the season, he'll be able to participate in offseason activities and training camp for any new team. Given his injury history and play, Jimmy G will likely need to find a gig as a veteran backup to rebuild his value.
