One dead and 21 injured in shooting near Super Bowl parade

The recent shooting near a Super Bowl parade, resulting in one fatality and 21 injuries, has once again brought the issue of gun violence to the forefront of public discourse. This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stricter gun control measures in our society.

The fact that such an act of violence occurred during a celebratory event is particularly distressing. Parades are meant to bring communities together, fostering joy and unity. However, this senseless act shattered that harmony, leaving families grieving and innocent bystanders traumatized.

The shots were fired west of Union Station, the train station in downtown Kansas City, which was where the parade ended at around 14:00 local time (20:00 GMT) and thousands of fans had gathered to watch the festivities.

Local reports said Kansas City Chiefs players were still on a stage there when the first shots rang out.

The gunfire caused the watching crowd, including the city's mayor and his family members, to run for cover.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said officers responded immediately after the gunshots broke out and detectives who were on the scene quickly opened an investigation. The Fire Department also sprang to action, administering aid to the injured.

Police haven't released the identity of the woman shot. The number of victims from this shooting is still evolving as law enforcement continues their investigation.

Officers took three people into custody, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said during the day's second news conference, updating the previous tally of two suspects brought in.

One suspect was captured after a foot chase with officers, she said.

"I'm angry at what happened today," Graves said earlier in the evening. "The people who came to this celebration should expect a safe environment."

"This is not Kansas City," she added at the end of the news conference.

The person who was killed has not been officially identified, but local radio station KKFI said on Facebook the victim was Lisa Lopez, one of the station's DJs.

"It is with sincere sadness and an extremely heavy and broken heart that we let our community know that KKFI DJ Lisa Lopez, host of Taste of Tejano lost her life today in the shooting at the KC Chiefs' rally," the station said. "Our hearts and prayers are with her family."

"This senseless act has taken a beautiful person from her family and this KC Community," KKFI added.
