Michigan State basketball win over No. 12 Illinois, 88-80

The recent victory of the Michigan State basketball team over No. 12 Illinois was not only a thrilling game but also a testament to the team's resilience and determination. This win should be celebrated and acknowledged as a significant achievement for the players, coaches, and fans.

Firstly, this victory demonstrates the exceptional talent and skill of the Michigan State basketball team. Beating a highly ranked opponent like Illinois is no easy feat, especially considering their impressive record this season. The players showcased their abilities on both ends of the court, displaying excellent teamwork, precision shooting, and solid defense throughout the game.

Because while the Illini have their warts — mostly they're missing a true point guard, which bit them late in the game Saturday — the Illini, physically, are as menacing as any team in college basketball. They're probably built for a deep tournament run more than MSU is. Although if guards win the day in college hoops, you’d take the day we saw from A.J. Hoggard and Tyson Walker.

Hall scored finished through contact for a pair of three-point plays to give MSU the lead for good, and Tyson Walker and A.J. Hoggard made sure the Spartans finished a much-needed marquee victory, knocking off the 12th-ranked Illini, 88-80, at Breslin Center.

MSU (15-9, 7-6 Big Ten) has won 11 of 15, and recovered from blowing a nine-point, second-half lead Tuesday in a bitter 59-56 loss at Minnesota.

The second half started with a bang for Illinois, and Guerrier immediately tied the game at 44 with a three. A couple of possessions later, Shannon put Illinois in front on an extremely deep three-pointer, its eighth of the day. Illinois’ scorching hot afternoon continued via Domask, who tied the game for the 10th time of the day (54-54).

Shannon continued to lead the way offensively. Getting active on the offensive glass led to an and-one before Hawkins set him up for a left-handed layup to move the Illini in front by five (69-64).

All seemed well for Illinois after Domask put its lead back at the highest it had been all game (72-64), but Michigan State rallied once again. An 8-0 run for the home team knotted the score at 72, and it was primed to take a lead in transition, but Domask came up with a massive block. Shannon ended an almost five-minute scoring drought for the Illini with a successful trip to the free throw line, moving them in front by two.

The final minute of play dragged on as it does in most close games, but the Spartans prevailed and took down the No. 10 team on their home court.

The Spartans will be back in action playing away on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. against Penn State. The game will be streamed on Big Ten Network.
