EPL title race: Man City win over Everton 2-0

The English Premier League title race is heating up, and Manchester City's recent 2-0 victory over Everton has solidified their position as the team to beat. With this win, City has shown their dominance and determination to reclaim the trophy.

Firstly, let's talk about their performance against Everton. City displayed exceptional teamwork and skill on the field, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Their defense was impenetrable, denying Everton any chance of a comeback. This victory not only showcased their talent but also demonstrated their ability to handle pressure in crucial matches.

In the last month, Oscar Bobb scored a stoppage-time winner at Newcastle United and Nathan Aké got a late goal at Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup. Julián Álvarez got two goals against Burnley in the Premier League. At Brentford on Monday, Phil Foden got three.

Invariably last season, City's match-winner was Erling Haaland, but while he's been away nursing a broken bone in his foot, manager Pep Guardiola has found other players willing to take on the responsibility of continuing their push for more trophies.

After a dip in form at the tail end of last year, City look back to their imperious best. Last weekend's 3-1 away win at Brentford was their ninth straight win across all competitions.

With Everton having recently slipped back into the bottom three, the Toffees' need for all three points on Saturday is arguably more acute than City's, but the visitors have not recorded a win against their title-chasing opponents since January 2017.

City started the game two points behind league leader Liverpool, which was hosting Burnley later Saturday.

City’s sixth straight league win, and 10th in a row in all competitions, was hard to come by, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford well protected by his defence and not having a shot to save in the first half.

The introduction of De Bruyne off the bench in the 57th minute added some urgency to City’s play, though the important first goal was hardly a classic.

Ruben Dias got his head on Julian Alvarez’s corner and the ball first hit Everton defender James Tarkowski and then Branthwaite, whose attempted clearance flew across to Haaland. The striker’s first-time shot flew past the unsighted Pickford.

Son Heung-min marked his return from Asian Cup duty with South Korea by setting up Brennan Johnson for the stoppage-time winner as Tottenham beat Brighton 2-1. In other results, Fulham beat Bournemouth 3-1, Ivan Toney scored again as Brentford won 2-0 at Wolverhampton and last-place Sheffield United won for just the third time this season, 3-1 at relegation rival Luton.
