Celebrating Lunar New Year 2024

The Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is a vibrant and culturally significant celebration that should be embraced by people all around the world. With the arrival of Lunar New Year 2024, it presents an excellent opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds to come together and partake in this joyous occasion.

Firstly, celebrating Lunar New Year promotes cultural understanding and appreciation. It allows people to learn about the rich traditions, customs, and values associated with this festival. By participating in activities such as lion dances, dragon parades, and firework displays, individuals can gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese culture and its significance.

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities have shaped the Golden State through foundational contributions to our past, present and future. As we take pride in this rich heritage, we also reflect on the ugly history of violence and discrimination targeting these communities that persists to this day. All of us must call out past and present racism and fight for the safety and inclusion of our fellow Californians.

Our state’s vibrant diversity is a deep point of pride and source of enduring strength. Last year, for the first time, we recognized Lunar New Year as an official state holiday, inviting everyone to appreciate the traditions of this special holiday. One year after the tragedy in Monterey Park, we also honor the memory of those senselessly taken from us, and hold in our hearts the brave survivors and all those mourning lost friends and loved ones.

“These festivals are a safe harbor for immigrants and their descendants, a way to preserve their heritage and memories,” Qiu said. “It’s also a chance to show up, stand up and speak up.”

On the eve of Lunar New Year, she explains why the ancient Chinese burned bamboo, the reason red envelopes should contain brand-new bills and how the humble chicken is actually a lucky food.

Last year, Governor Kathy Hochul signed historic legislation making Lunar New Year an official school holiday in New York, underscoring her commitment to supporting New York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. We encourage everyone to join with our colleagues and partners who identify with Chinese, Tibetan, Korean, Singaporean, Thai, Malaysian and Vietnamese heritage to celebrate the Lunar New Year.

My best wishes for a happy Lunar New Year to our entire OPWDD community. As we all look forward to the possibility of a fresh start, I wish you prosperity and good fortune and a new year filled with togetherness and warmth as you celebrate with friends and family.
