The Caf Afcon semi-finals between Nigeria and Angola were a highly anticipated match that showcased the talent and skill of both teams. The game was held at a packed stadium, with fans eagerly awaiting the outcome.
From the start, it was clear that both teams were determined to secure their place in the finals. Nigeria, known for their attacking style of play, dominated possession early on. Their quick passes and precise movements put pressure on Angola's defense. However, Angola's resilience and strong defensive tactics prevented Nigeria from scoring in the first half.
Atalanta forward Lookman, the former England Under-21 international, had scored both goals in Nigeria's defeat of Cameroon in the last 16 and he made it three in two games as the Super Eagles claimed their third 1-0 victory of the tournament.
The goal came four minutes before half-time at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, with Moses Simon collecting a pass on the left, accelerating away from Kialonda Gaspar and driving into the area before cutting the ball back for Lookman to finish.
That was enough for Nigeria to win through to their 15th Cup of Nations semi-final, which is more appearances than any other country.
Angola almost equalised soon after the break when substitute Abrosini Salvador was sent through one-on-one but could only rattle the post with his effort.
The Palancas Negras continued to threaten, but Osimhen looked to have doubled Nigeria's advantage against the run of play, rising highest to head in Lookman's cross with 16 minutes left.
But the effort was ruled out bv the referee leaving the final minutes of the match in a high tempo.
The Super Eagles advance to the semi-finals for the 15th time as they continue their bid for a fourth African title.
Even as Nigeria scrapped their way through the group and beat Cameroon in the last 16 with clean sheets, there were plenty of fans grumbling at Peseiro. Many have said they do not want the Portuguese 63-year-old to stay on even if Nigeria win the tournament. And it is true that Peseiro – 13 jobs since leaving Sporting in 2005, none of them for more than 50 games – did not seem an inspiring choice and their football is not particularly exciting.
Nigeria secured a narrow victory over the Angola national team (1-0) in a Quarterfinal match of AFCON 2023. Despite being superior to their opponents, the Angolan team did not give up, and they came close to securing a spot in the Semifinals.
