Doncic shines with 73, tied for 4th in NBA history

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Luka Doncic, the young Slovenian prodigy, etched his name in the annals of basketball history by scoring an incredible 73 points in a single game. This remarkable feat places him tied for fourth on the list of highest-scoring games in NBA history.

Doncic's performance was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment he stepped onto the court, it was evident that something special was about to unfold. His shooting touch seemed flawless as he effortlessly sank shot after shot from all areas of the court. The crowd erupted with each basket, witnessing greatness unfold before their eyes.

It marked the highest-scoring game in the NBA this season, passing the 70-point performance by Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid on Monday against the San Antonio Spurs. It also tied Wilt Chamberlain and David Thompson for the fourth-highest output in NBA history. Chamberlain, who owns the NBA record with 100 points, also had a 78-point outing, while Kobe Bryant finished with 81 points on Jan. 22, 2006.

Dončić, who has been averaging 33.6 points per game this NBA season, not only outscored Embiid, but also himself and the Mavericks. His 73-point game is his personal best and a team best. Before Friday's shootout, both of those records sat at 60.

It also put Dončić, 24, in fourth place for the highest-scoring game for a player in NBA history.

The Mavs celebrated the achievement by posting what appears to be a photo of Doncic as a child on X, wearing a photoshopped-on version of his current jersey.

Doncic has joined their echelon, his 73 tying Thompson and Chamberlain (who did it twice) for fourth-most ever in an NBA game.

    “It was beautiful,” Doncic said.

Doncic’s previous career best was 60 points. He made 25 of 33 shots in Dallas’ 148-143 win over Atlanta, plus went 15 of 16 from the foul line and 8 of 13 from 3-point range.

Monday was the fourth time multiple players had ever scored 60 or more points in the same day and Friday was the fourth. By the NBA's count, there have been five games of 60-plus points in 2023-24, the most in a season since 1962-63, when there were nine.

Dončić and Embiid are also the latest in a spate of 70-point scorers, as Damian Lillard and Donovan Mitchell's 70-point nights both came last season.
