On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President Joe Biden made his third visit to Pennsylvania this year, but this time he was not there for a political rally or to deliver a speech. Instead, he spent the day volunteering in honor of the civil rights leader.
President Biden understands the significance of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy and the importance of service to others. By volunteering on this day, he is not only paying tribute to Dr. King but also encouraging others to follow in his footsteps.
Volunteering is an act of selflessness and compassion that embodies the spirit of Dr. King's teachings. It is a way for individuals to give back to their communities and make a positive impact on the lives of others.
“From bridges and ballot boxes to pulpits and courthouses, Dr. King courageously stood for the sacred idea that embodies the soul of America,” Biden wrote in a post on X, formerly Twitter to commemorate the day. “We are all created equal in the image of God and deserve to be treated equally throughout our lives.”
Meanwhile, in South Carolina, a key state for the Democratic primary and one that proved crucial to Biden's campaign in 2020, Harris delivered a stark warning that freedom in America is “under profound threat.”
“As Dr. King wrote in the letter from Birmingham jail, the goal of America is freedom,” Harris said during her keynote address at the NAACP South Carolina State Conference. “And so, we gather this afternoon to honor his legacy and I therefore pose a question that I do believe Dr. King would ask today: in 2024 where exactly is America in our fight for freedom?”
Biden's MLK visit marks the third time in four years that the president has spent the day giving back with Philabundance and the fourth time the president has visited the Keystone State since December 2023.
The president volunteered alongside Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker Monday morning and helped prepare food boxes for those in need around the region.
Biden has already been in Pennsylvania twice this month, most recently traveling to Allentown on Jan. 12 to visit local small businesses and talk up his economic record, and back on Jan. 5 he spoke in Montgomery County to commemorate three years since the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
The president will be visiting the sports complex in South Philadelphia -- and causing some road closures between 11:30 a.m. and noon.
Officials said those traveling to the 1 p.m. 76ers game at the Wells Fargo Center should be prepared for some possible traffic disruptions.
