In a thrilling encounter, Barcelona narrowly salvaged a win against Almeria with a scoreline of 3-2. However, the victory was marred by wastefulness and lackluster performance from the Catalan giants.
From the start, it was evident that Barcelona dominated possession and controlled the game. They created numerous chances but failed to convert them into goals. The wastefulness in front of goal was alarming, as they missed several clear-cut opportunities. This lack of clinical finishing has been a recurring issue for Barcelona this season.
Some of the jeers came even after Barcelona found a way to beat last-place Almeria 3-2 on Wednesday, a much-needed hard-fought victory that ended a three-game winless streak and moved the Catalan club back to third place.
“We understand why the fans aren’t too happy, we aren’t either,” Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto said. “But we have to be more united than ever now. We need the fans behind us. Hopefully we will begin next year with the right foot.”
Bayer Leverkusen go into the Bundesliga’s winter break in top spot after Patrik Schick’s first-half hat-trick set up a 4-0 victory against Bochum. Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten side took half an hour to make the breakthrough from Schick’s penalty, but the Czech striker quickly added a second from Jérémie Frimpong’s low cross.
Schick struck again just before half-time, heading home Álex Grimaldo’s corner. Leverkusen added a fourth goal through the substitute Victor Boniface in the 69th minute, and stay four points clear of Bayern Munich, who have a game in hand, after Harry Kane earned the Bavarians a hard-fought 2-1 win at Wolfsburg.
However, Almeria once again showed their fighting spirit by equalizing through an impressive long-range strike in stoppage time. Just as it seemed like a draw was inevitable, Messi stepped up once again to secure victory for his team with a stunning free-kick goal in the dying moments of the game.
The match between Barcelona and Almeria will be remembered as an enthralling contest that encapsulated everything we love about football - skillful playmaking, unwavering determination from both sides, and an unpredictable outcome until the final whistle blew.
