The premiere of the film adaptation of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" was a highly anticipated event for fans of the beloved book series. The movie, directed by Chris Columbus, brought to life the fantastical world created by author Rick Riordan.
As fans gathered outside the theater, excitement filled the air. Many had been waiting years for this moment, eager to see their favorite characters come alive on the big screen. The cast, including Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson and Alexandra Daddario as Annabeth Chase, received a warm welcome from the crowd as they arrived in glamorous attire.
Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) is a 12-year-old outcast living in New York with few friends and a lot of strange occurrences in his daily life. One day Percy discovers that he's no normal tween but in fact a half-blood demigod. All that Greek mythology he learned about in English class? It's all real, and now monsters like minotaurs and furies are after him.
Strong performances from our central duo aside, the show has plenty of charm. The visuals of Percy’s native New York and the idyllic summer camp far surpass much of the sludgy CGI nonsense of recent action fare. Jason Mantzoukas is deliciously cast as Dionysus, the god of wine, who has been banned from booze and resentfully sips on a diet cola as he tries to manipulate Percy into fetching him a bottle of 1985 Château Haut-Brion. While Glynn Turman’s Chiron does at times slip into “magical negro” territory, using his powers to selflessly care for our young white protagonist, Turman has a Shakespearean heft that keeps things dignified.
Jeffries’ Annabeth Chase is what you’d imagine if the character leapt to life from the page, embodying the essence of Athena’s daughter. Each episode reveals a new layer of humanity, girlhood, and witty strength as Jeffries adds to the library of Blackness existing in fantasy. For Jeffries, showcasing Annabeth’s strength was vital to how she portrayed the role with hopes that other Black girls would see themselves in her.
Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series begins on a high note due to its relatable protagonist, fast-paced storytelling, and humorous undertones. This combination ensures that readers are hooked from the start and eager to continue following Percy's adventures in subsequent books.
